Update: Stranger Danger Incident on Bike Leads to School Alert

Buena Vista Elementary fifth-grader ignored invitation to follow another bike, instead rode home to report situation to his parents.

UPDATE

A stranger on a bicycle shouted an invitation to follow him to a bike-riding fifth-grader on Parkside Drive Tuesday after school, according to an alert sent by the Walnut Creek School District.

The fifth-grader rode home and told his parents.

He had stopped at a stoplight and man rode by, past the crosswalk on Parkside Drive, and shouted, "Yo, yo, yo, go follow me," said Walnut Creek Police Lt. Bryan Hill, but did not try to stop and converse with the fifth-grader. The man was riding a light blue bike with a wicker basket.

Police are investigating. "We always take these things seriously," said Hill, who added on Thursday that it appears it is an isolated incident — no other stranger danger incidents have been reported.

The text of the school alert from Superintendent Patricia Wool follows:

In a commitment to keep all students safe, we are sending the following alert.

On Tuesday, October 4, a Buena Vista student riding his bike home on Parkside Drive reported that a man on a bike shouted to the boy "Yo, yo, yo, go, go follow me." The boy did not follow the man and rode home to immediately tell his parents.  The man was a white male, 35 years old, 6 ft. tall, short black hair.  He was wearing dark blue jeans, gray short sleeve shirt, green baseball hat and had a green backpack.  He was riding a light blue bike with a wicker basket on front.

We are thankful and proud that our BV fifth grader knew just what to do.  Please caution your children to not follow or talk to strangers and to report any activity such as this to an adult immediately.  WCSD contacted the police concerning this incident; please notify the police department if you see anyone matching this description around any of our schools.
