Walnut Creek Home Destroyed in Early Morning Fire

-By Bay City News

An unoccupied house in Walnut Creek was destroyed by a fire early this morning, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District official said.

Neighbors called the fire department around 4:45 a.m. to report a fire at a house in the 1800 block of Sunnyvale Avenue, which was undergoing renovations, Fire Marshal Lewis Broschard said.

The first crew arrived to find the house engulfed in flames, with fire showing from three sides of the building, Broschard said. Firefighters were able to contain the one-alarm blaze to the house, and kept the flames from spreading to neighboring homes. The fire was controlled in about 30 minutes.

Fire officials said the home was destroyed, and the loss was estimated at $300,000. No injuries were reported, and fire investigators are continuing to probe what caused the blaze.
