Warm Weather, Drunk Driving Means More and Deadlier Accidents

A summary of traffic accidents in Walnut Creek in 2012.

A recently study by the Walnut Creek police revealed that, as the weather warms up, so do the incidents of hit-and-run driving, and DUIs.

It's also clear that accidents involving intoxicated drivers have higher rates of serious injury and death.

A compilation of 2012 Walnut Creek police statistics has been put together by Appel, a local law firm.

One discovery that should not come as a surprise to local drivers is the dangerous nature of several intersections along the Ygnacio Valley Rd. corridor. The study found that the intersections of Ygnacio and Oak Grove Rd., Civic Dr., N. Main St. and N. California Blvd. were all exceptionally high in the number of accidents.

The most accidents also occur between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., which is when most local schools let out.

There were 198 misdemeanor hit and runs in 2012 in Walnut Creek, and three felony hit and runs (which means one or more people were injured).

Of the 360 traffic accidents, 196 involved injuries, while 164 did not. Of the six DUI-related accidents, three were non-injury, one was a minor injury, and one involved a major injury. There was also one fatality involving a DUI.

Where do you think the most dangerous intersections are in Walnut Creek?
