According to Walnut Creek police detectives, about once a month an elderly Walnut Creek resident falls victim to the “grandchild in jail scam” where the perpetrator calls the victim identifying herself as her granddaughter. The impostor says she is in jail and needs money (from $3,000 - $5,000) wired to an offshore address to secure her release.
But that’s not the only scam crooks are trying on seniors in Walnut Creek, where 25 percent of residents are 65 and older, according to U.S. census figures, and nearly 1 in 5 residents lives in the Rossmoor retirement community.

Atria Valley View, an assisted living community, will be hosting Walnut Creek Police Officer David Rangel who will educate seniors on the current scams being utilized by perpetrators and helpful tips to avoid fraud abuse.
