Schools Scrutinize Cuts From Sacramento

Revenue 'trigger' was not as severe as it could have been for midyear adjustments.

The cuts the state announced last week mean a $45,500 hit to the Walnut Creek School District budget, said Superintendent Patricia Wool.

"We had put money aside and will cover this," . "Clearly, even though the hit is less than we thought, it still means that we aren’t able to put back all programs that we would like to."

When the state passed a budget last summer, officials penciled in $88.4 billion in revenues. It looks like revenues will fall $2.2 billion short of that, the Brown administration announced this week. The actual "trigger" reported by the state

The Mount Diablo Unified School District board last week reviewed a qualified three-year budget report
that projected a revenue shortfall by 2014, but officials said that was based on a more dire prediction of state shortfalls. That means the amount of funding lost per student won't be as high as expected.

Gov. Jerry Brown has been advocating a temporary increase of taxes on the wealthiest Californians, and raising the statewide sales tax by half a penny in order to avoid further cuts when he releases the next budget plan in January.
