Walnut Creek Tennis Team Finishes Second In National Tournament

The team beat a squad from Puerto Rico to reach the finals

The women’s tennis team from Walnut Creek, representing the United States Tennis Association's Northern California Section, finished second at the USTA League Adult 40 & Over 4.0 National Championships held last weekend in Indian Wells in Southern California.

The Walnut Creek team lost to a team from Harrison, N.Y., 4-1 in the championship match on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Walnut Creek team defeated a team from Puerto Rico, 5-0 in the semifinals.  They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contests Friday and Saturday.

The team is captained by Erin Mastrangelo and features Susan Gwynn, Lynn Worley, Arlene Acosta, Jolene Soliman, Veronica El Baze, Amy Buscaglia, Dixie King, Elise Lewis, Bonnie Merrill, Rene Conroy, Pamela Welsh, Dolores Schmidt, Jennifer Wirfel, Lori Sakamoto, Joanne Rupert.

It plays at Club Sport Valley Vista.

The USTA League was established to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels.
