Fun Family Field Trips this Weekend!

Trains, kites, fairy tales or animals, are some of the many choices for a fun family outing this weekend.

With the Olympics coverage ramping up this weekend, you might just feel like sitting in front of the television.  Your kids, however, might not have the attention span for hours of Olympics competition. So set the DVR and hop in the car for a fun family field trip:

Feast for the Beasts is happening this Saturday, July 28th at the Oakland Zoo. The first 250 guests (over age 2) will have the chance to enter the elephant exhibit and deliver their donated fruits or veggies for the elephants to eat. Special feedings and activities are scheduled throughout the day.

The day will be all about kites this weekend at the Berkeley Kite Festival.  Kids can make kites, enjoy team kite flying demonstrations, learn how to fly kites and more at this free event from 10am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

If your kids are Thomas the Tank Engine fans they will love a Day Out With Thomas - Mystery on the Rails Tour at Roaring Camp Railroads.  The event runs from Friday through Sunday this weekend and next.  Tickets are $14 - $19 with advance purchase.

Do you remember Children's Fairyland from your youth?  This lakeside park in Oakland is just the right size for the little ones.  The Bay Area Children's Theatre brings the Caldecott Honor book Click Clack Moo, The Cows that Type to life this weekend and next.  Tickets are $15 ($10 members) and include admission to the park.

There are plenty of things to do this weekend on this side of the tunnel if you want to stay closer to home.  You can check them out on the Macaroni Kid Walnut Creek calendar here.  Also, we would love your nominations for our Macaroni Kid Approved survey of your favorite businesses.  Complete our survey by Sunday, July 29th and you can enter to win free admission for four to the upcoming Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

You can subscribe to the Macaroni Kid Walnut Creek weekly e-newsletter and receive lots of great ideas each week.  Have a great weekend!

I hate sand in parks. Nice breeding area for lice, and a great place for ferrel cats to poop. IRead More can't wait for them to do the park at Arbolado.

How about you research the current ADA guidelines regarding surface materials for play areas?Read More Walnut Creek is simply acting to be in compliance. Not sure where you get the idea that wood chips are "much more dangerous". A reasonable overview of the current regulations can be found here: http://risk.utah.gov/newsletter/documents/playground_surfacing.pdf If you disagree with the regulations, please contact your representatives.
